Gas/Water Serviceworker

The Owatonna Public Utilities (OPU) has an opening for a Gas and Water Serviceworker.   The primary function of this position will be to perform a wide variety of natural gas and water construction, operation, and maintenance on our distribution system.   This position responds to customer gas and water requests for service including restoration of gas or water services.   General buildings & grounds maintenance tasks are performed as needed. Operates equipment listed below when performing job tasks.        

Qualifications for this position are the following:

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Associate/Technical Degree in a Gas or Water Maintenance Program is desired. 
  • 3 years’ work experience in Gas and/or Water Systems is desired.
  • Plumbing experience is desired.
  • Gas Operator Qualified Certificate is required or must obtain within 1 year of employment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel is desired.
  • Work experience with a skid loader, backhoe, trencher, compressor, flame ionization unit, tapping machine, CGI, fusion equipment, odorant injection equipment, boring equipment, hydro-vacuum, welder, and trenchbox is desired.
  • Minnesota Class A Commercial Drivers License is required or must obtain within 6 months of employment.
  • Position is on a standby rotation with a 20-minute response time requirement.

Electric Engineering Technician

The Owatonna Public Utilities (OPU) has an opening for an Electric Engineering Technician.  This position performs field engineering, staking and inspections on our Electric Distribution Systems.  Assists with engineering layouts and drawings using CAD. Is liaison between the Utility, City, developers, builders, and contractors to insure new services and rebuilds are completed timely. Promptly responds to customer inquiries about their electric service.

Qualifications for this position are the following:

  • Two (2) year Certificate/Degree in Electrical field is required; ie Engineering, Electric Lineworker program, Electrician program, etc.
  • Two (2) years Electrical work experience is required.
  • Valid Minnesota Class “D” Drivers License is required.
  • Working knowledge of ESRI, CAD, Microsoft Office Suite is required.

Journey Lineworker

Owatonna Public Utilities is seeking a journey lineworker. The successful candidate will safely perform electric distribution system construction and maintenance work on an electric de-energized and energized 12,700 volt distribution system serving 12,000+ customers.  Assists in the training and instruction of Apprentice Lineworkers.   Provides timely restoration of electric services to customers.

Qualifications for this position are:    

  • Electric Lineworker Technical Certificate/Degree is required.
  • Two (2) years performing electric distribution system construction and  maintenance work as a Journey Lineworker at an electric utility company is required. 
  • Minnesota Class “A” Commercial Drivers’ License is required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel is desired.
  • Work experience with Aerial Lift truck, Digger Derrick truck, trencher, skid loader, trench box, mini exavator 2-way radio is desired.
  • Position is on stand-by rotation with a 20 minute response time requirement.
